Although our hospitals deal with emergencies every day, there may be occasions when we face an emergency that is outside our day-to-day capabilities.
There may also be situations in which our ability to provide our core services is seriously compromised, resulting in a significant disruption of services.
These are known as Major Emergencies/Incidents and require an extra response of personnel and resources to deal with the consequences.
All emergency services, local authorities, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Environmental Agency and NHS providers (acute and primary care) are obliged by the UK Resilience - Civil Contingencies Act 2004 to prepare for such emergencies.
