Clinical volunteers

At St Richard's, clinical volunteers are based on wards and in outpatient areas, and are managed separately from volunteers in other areas.

Their numbers also include our therapeutic care volunteers and breastfeeding support volunteers. You must by 16 or over to become a clinical volunteer.

Clinical volunteers on wards:

  • Assist with mealtime trolley rounds, including feeding patients
  • Help with bed-making
  • Assist with patient menu rounds
  • Provide emotional and listening support to patients, and act as a liaison between the patient and nursing staff

Therapeutic care volunteers:

  • Deliver therapeutic care treatment, i(e.g. neck, shoulder and hand massage and nail care) to inpatients following procedures and techniques taught in training
  • Keep written records of all treatment delivered
  • Provide emotional and listening support to patients, and act as a liaison between the patient and nursing staff

Clinical volunteers in outpatient areas:

  • Deliver patient medical records to consulting rooms
  • Sort medical records for following clinics into alphabetical order
  • Act as a guide to patients, directing them to correct waiting areas or to other clinics
    Provide emotional and listening support to patients, and act as a liaison between the patient and nursing staff
  • Occasionally take patients to other locations in a wheelchair
  • Generally assist receptionists in the smooth running of the clinic
