Charity concert to help breast cancer patients

Monday February 9, 2015

On Saturday 7th March at 7pm in St Thomas a Becket Church, Pagham, well-known local choir Chichester Voices will be joined by a professional orchestra and soloists in a performance of J S Bach’s masterpiece, the B Minor Mass, in a concert to help raise funds for a £60,000 Faxitron in-theatre radiography machine  to help treat breast cancer patients at St Richard’s Hospital.

The Friends of Chichester Hospitals’ are buying the machine to help surgeons performing a breast biopsy receive an immediate analysis of the sample.

The surgeon can then determine whether a mastectomy is required or not, and complete the operation much more quickly than if the sample had to be sent elsewhere for analysis, even within the hospital.

The benefit to patients is immense – a shorter time in surgery, reduced likelihood of need for further tissue removal, and fewer patients requiring a full mastectomy. The rapid analysis reduces uncertainty both for surgeon and patient – and the patient’s family.

Soloists Marina Cassidy & Alexandra Gibson will be singing the soprano parts. Marina has performed with Chichester Voices on many occasions in the past, and enjoys a very varied musical life in Ireland.

Alexandra is based in Scotland, but finds herself travelling far and wide singing many of the great works. The alto, tenor & bass soloists come from the highly regarded Chichester Cathedral Choir.

Chris Pilgrim, Stefan Kennedy & David Riley manage to combine their very demanding choral commitments in the cathedral with varied solo performances both locally and further afield.

The orchestra will be playing period instruments and will be led by the highly talented Julia Kuhn. Julia chose to specialise in playing of the Baroque violin, graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, and is in considerable demand both in the UK & abroad.

The performance will be directed by Andrew Naylor, a well-known name in local music.

Tickets are priced at £15 (the main body of the church and gallery) and £12 in the transepts (limited view). Available from box offices on 07976 917271 & 07900 098197 and on the door. Email
