Private patients

If you are referring a patient for a private blood test please do not send the patient to the Phlebotomy service in Pathology.

Instead; please refer the patient to Downlands Ward at Worthing Hospital. A phone call to the ward will inform you whether it can be done immediately.

  • Downlands Ward 01903 285286/285280
  • Internal ext 5286/5813/5280

If not; an appointment will be made for the patient.

Please note: This does not apply to children under the age of 12 years - these are attended to in the Childrens Centre at Worthing Hospital Please telephone 01903 286700 for an appointment.

There is a separate (blue) form for Haematology and Chemistry private pathology requests; available from the Haematology Dept.

A single charge for private pathology tests will be sent to the patient by one of the consultant pathologists; who will act as agent for the health trust. A scale of charges for private pathology is available for inspection.

Category II patients

Any work not covered by the National Health Act 1977 or not deemed to be private patient work comes under Category II of the NHS Act.

This includes work such as insurance testing (eg: HIV); medico-legal work; pre-employment health screening; blood groups for foreign travel and emigration etc.

In these circumstances the Pathologist concerned will charge a fee (to the patient); of which one third is paid to the health trust. All request forms must be marked clearly as Category II.
