If this is your first pregnancy

Find out what happens at: 

    

8-12 weeks pregnant

Your midwife will contact you to make this appointment.

Appointment with?  

  • Midwife

What will happen?  

  • Booking paperwork will be completed

  • Plan of care will be made

  • Your choice for place of birth will be discussed

  • Screening tests for the pregnancy will be discussed   

  • The midwife will discuss your diet, exercise, alcohol consumption and smoking


16 weeks pregnant

You need to arrange this appointment yourself after you have seen your midwife for the first time.

Appointment with?  

  • Midwife

What will happen?

  • The midwife will check your BMI, take some blood, and will need a spcimen of urine 

  • The midwife will review how your pregnancy is progressing and go through any test results with you 

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and urine  


20 weeks pregnant

Appointment with? 

  • Hospital

What will happen?

  • Ultra sound scan

25 weeks pregnant

Appointment with?  

  • Midwife/GP

What will happen?

  • The midwife will measure the height of your bump with a tape measure 

  • The midwife will ask you about your baby's movements 

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and test your urine 

  • You can discuss any concerns you have about the pregnancy 

  • If you are over 25 weeks pregnant, your midwife can complete for you the Health in Pregnancy Grant form, which enables you to claim £190  


28 weeks pregnant

Appointment with?  

  • Midwife

What will happen?

  • The midwife will measure the height of your bump 

  • The midwife will ask you about your baby's movements 

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and test your urine 

  • The midwife will need to take some blood 

  • You will be given information about antenatal classes

  • If you haven't already received it, your midwife will give you the Health in Pregnancy Grant form, which enables you to claim £190

  • The midwife will measure the height of your bump 

  • The midwife will ask you about your baby's movements 

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and test your urine 

  • The midwife will discuss the results of the blood test taken at your last appointment  


34 weeks pregnant

Appointment with?  

  • Midwife/GP

What will happen?

  • The midwife will measure the height of your bump with a tape measure 

  • The midwife will ask you about your baby's movements 

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and test your urine

  • The midwife will check that your baby is in a head down position

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and test your urine 

  • The midwife will weigh you  


38 weeks pregnant

What will happen?

  • The midwife will measure the height of your bump 

  • The midwife will ask you about your baby's movements 

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and test your urine

41 weeks pregnant

  • The midwife will measure the height of your bump 

  • The midwife will ask you about your baby's movements 

  • The midwife will check your blood pressure and test your urine 

  • You will be offered an internal examination to stimulate contractions. this is called a 'membrane sweep' 

  • You will be offered an appointment for induction of labour
