Information for patients undergoing a general anaesthetic
Before you undergo surgery, we need to make sure you are fit enough to have an operation and go home on the same day.
We do this at what is called a pre-assessment appointment, which will be with a nurse and take about 20 minutes.
You will need to bring:
- A urine specimen
- Any medicines you are already taking
At your appointment, the nurse will:
- Ask you about your health, medical history and home circumstances
- Check your pulse and blood pressure
- Weigh you and measure your height.
The nurse may also carry out an electrocardiogram (ECG) to measure the electrical activity of your heart. If you need any blood tests, these will be done at the same time in the pathology department.
You will then be given any further information you need about your surgery, and we will confirm the date and time of your operation.
