A wedding wish come true
A wish come true was made possible on Birdham ward this week when staff organised an impromptu wedding for their patient in less than three days.
Rosa, who has been on the ward for two weeks, mentioned on Saturday how much she would like to get married again, but sadly thought it not possible due to her failing health.
However, colleagues were so touched by her comments that by Tuesday they had turned her dream into reality.
They beautifully decorated an old doctor’s room, converting its drab interior into a draped white setting fit for a marriage ceremony.
We couldn’t thank the Birdham team at St Richard’s enough for their care and going above and beyond to make her dream come true
A registrar was invited, twinkling lights shone, music played and a cake and bubbly was arranged to make the occasion as special as possible for Rosa and her partner Alf.
“We’re all very proud of what the team achieved in such a short space of time,” said ward manager Fran Smith. “The ward all came together to make this day special for one of our patients and the family were so happy we could make this happen.”
Rosa’s daughter, Donna, said: “We couldn’t thank the Birdham team at St Richard’s enough for their care and going above and beyond to make her dream come true to marry my dad today. You are all amazing – thank you!”
Matron Jacquie Dominick agreed wholeheartedly and commended everyone involved. She said: “I’m amazed that on such a busy ward staff still managed to make this one wish come true for a patient – it really does show how we put the patient first.”
Following the ceremony, the celebrations spilled out into the hospital grounds, where a large group of family and friends celebrated the union of Rosa and Alf.
Rosa said the day had been amazing and had made her very happy.
