Christmas comes early to Bluefin Ward

Christmas comes early for Bluefin Ward

Friday October 10, 2014

Christmas came early for the young patients in Bluefin Ward at Worthing Hospital last week.

More than £1,000 worth of brand new toys and technology was donated to the children’s ward thanks to a fundraising family from Upper Beeding.

“We just wanted to give something back, and do something for Bluefin,” said Louise Read, whose 12-year-old son Westley was admitted with juvenile arthritis earlier this year.

While he received treatment his younger sisters played with toys in the ward’s play room.

Their father, James Hunt, said: “The doctors and nurses were brilliant, but the play staff made a massive difference to us.”

To buy new toys for the ward the family started fundraising and hosted a raffle, organised a jumble sale, and appealed for donations.

James said: “We were hoping to raise enough for a tablet computer and maybe a games console, but our local community in Upper Beeding came out in force, and we ended up with more than £1100 of new toys and games to give.”

The impressive haul, which the family donated in person, includes an X-Box 360 and Playstation 3 games consoles, two Samsung tablet computers, portable DVD players, dolls, Lego, books, dress-up outfits, and much more.

Westley, who goes to Steyning Grammar School where his mum also works, said it was amazing to see so many brand new toys and he felt proud to donate them to the hospital.

Hayley Edwards, Play Assistant on Bluefin Ward, said: “Christmas has come early for us this year.

“All the presents they have donated are a massive compliment to us because it shows we made them feel really cared for.”

On behalf of Worthing Hospital, Hayley thanked the family for their generosity, as well as all those who helped them buy the gifts for paediatric patients and their families.
