Kirsty’s ‘loving care’ wins her a staff award
Healthcare assistant Kirsty Mills from Castle ward in Worthing Hospital has won Employee of the Month following a heartfelt nomination from an end-of-life patient’s friend and fellow nurse.
They shared the following story with the judging panel: “A very dear friend of mine was recently admitted to Castle ward after a shock cancer diagnosis. Sadly he died there two weeks later. The ward staff were excellent throughout, but Kirsty was especially kind and caring.
proper, basic, loving care makes such a huge difference
“I have been a nurse for 40 years and have seen many changes in the NHS during that time, some not, in my opinion, for the better. However, I will be forever grateful to Kirsty for going that extra mile for Richard in the final days and hours of his life.”
The patient’s friend continued: “Whilst he was conscious she made the time to chat with him and make him feel comfortable and safe. In the last hours, she made a special effort to ensure he was clean and dignified, even to the extent of cleaning his fingernails. It is this kind of proper, basic, loving care that makes such a huge difference to family and friends when a loved one is dying.”
This heartfelt nomination was endorsed by matron Sue Shepherd, who added: “Kirsty is an excellent nurse who always does her utmost to deliver patient care to an exceptional standard on Castle ward.
“Watching a beloved friend or family member slip away can be incredibly hard for those left behind, but having caring, compassionate staff, providing outstanding care right up to the very end gives comfort not only for the patient, but for those who love them. Well done, Kirsty.”
Employee of the Month winners receive a £50 bonus, certificate of congratulations and invitation to the trust’s Patient First STAR Awards, shortlisted for the Employee of the Year category.
