New vision for Southlands unveiled

Friday October 23, 2015

A new vision for Southlands Hospital in Shoreham-by-Sea can be seen for the first time as plans for an improved multi-million pound ophthalmology department go on show.

Eye care specialists from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have been working with patients, architects and developers to create new patient-centred facilities at the hospital.

The service will be called Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands and is designed to enable more patients to receive all tests, results and diagnosis in one visit, with many treatments also available on the same day.

Plans are still in progress and we welcome people’s views and input

The plans will be displayed next month when patients, members of the public and any interested parties are invited to meet the Eye Care team and share their thoughts about the £7.5m project.

Two exhibitions will showcase all the latest information about the development of Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands and provide an opportunity for people to have their say on the plans.

Consultant ophthalmologist, Mr Masoud Teimory, said:  “We’ve worked hard to reach this stage, but the plans are still in progress and we welcome people’s views and input into developing Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands.

“This is a very exciting time for us and our patients, as our vision for improved and larger facilities at Southlands is fast becoming a reality.

“I hope to talk with lots of interested people at the exhibitions and explain how our new purpose-designed accommodation will help us deliver excellent care in a more patient-centred way.”

The first exhibition takes place on Monday 2 November from 4pm to 7pm at Worthing Hospital Education Centre (WHEC), Worthing Hospital, Lyndhurst Road, Worthing, BN11 2DH.

A second exhibition takes place again for three hours from 4.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 4 November, in the OcTherapy Room, Southlands Hospital, Upper Shoreham Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 6TQ.

Visitors can drop-in at any time over the three hours, meet members of the Eye Care team, ask questions, view plans and share their thoughts about the new ophthalmology outpatients centre.

The information will also be available to view at www.westernsussexhospitals.nhs.uk/eyecare from November onwards, and will go on public display in both hospitals following the exhibitions.

Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands is due open in early 2017, with all ophthalmology outpatients services moving from Worthing Hospital at this time, as agreed following the Service Redesign for Quality public consultation in 2011.
