“Are we reaching you?” – membership survey results

Thursday April 7, 2016

Earlier this year we asked members to help us shape and improve the way the trust communicates with its membership. 160 members completed the “Are we reaching you?” survey and the results are now available. We were very grateful for this feedback which will help improve how we communicate with you.

Summary findings

I know how to provide feedback on services

  •  69% of respondees strongly agreed or agreed that they did know how to provide feedback.

As a member I can help shape services

  • 63% agreed with this statement, while only 6% disagreed.

Would you recommend becoming a Trust member to your family and friends?

  • 84% of people who responded to the survey would recommend becoming a member.

“Are we reaching you?” survey 2016 – finds and actions

Why did you decide to become a member of Western Sussex Hospitals?

(more than one reason could be given)

  • 84% people said it was to support their local hospital
  • 53% said it was to provide feedback and shape services
  • 14% said it was to attend Medicine for Members events
  • 10% added other reason such as civic duty, be part of the community, to receive information about the trust such as service developments

This enthusiastic support is most welcome and appreciated. We need to improve the way we signpost people to ‘feedback and shape services’ because this is clearly a strong reason for becoming a member yet in the question ‘how to provide feedback’ we had a reasonably high response for neither agree or disagree.

ACTION: To promote our Governors as a way to feedback to the organisation. To include feedback methods in our contacts with members with email links for convenience.

Do you think the quantity of information you receive from the Trust is:

  • 9% said not enough
  • 89% said about right
  • 1% said too much

We were pleased that generally you felt that the number of times we link with you is about right.

ACTION: We will be sending out our @WesternSussex newsletter for trust members on a monthly basis. This will include notification of all forthcoming events for members and trust events more generally. Members can of course also follow us on Twitter, Facebook and visit our website at any time.

Are you interested in becoming more involved as a member?

  • 39% of people said yes, 61% said no

This was an uplifting response and reflects the commitment our communities have to their local hospitals, staff and volunteers.

ACTION: Our Membership Committee will consider and promote what opportunities there are for members to become more involved in our work.

I know how to provide feedback on services

  • Strongly agree and agree total was 69%
  • Neither agree or disagree was 24%
  • Strongly disagree and disagree was 7%

As covered in response to first question this response is very welcome and we are pleased most members surveys know how to communicate with the trust.

ACTION: To promote our Governors as a way to feedback to the organisation. To include feedback methods in our contacts with members with email links for convenience.

Feedback I provide is listened to and acted upon

  • Strongly agree and agree total was 39%
  • Neither agree or disagree was 59%
  • Strongly disagree and disagree was 2%

ACTION:  We are discussing how to demonstrate that we have acted on feedback and we decided to make it very clear at Stakeholder Forum meetings when we follow up comments from previous meetings, and to use the AGM event and Annual Report to demonstrate were action has been taken. We also publish a series of posters along our corridors which are entitled “you said, we did” which demonstrate actions as a result of listening to feedback.

As a member I can help shape services

  • Strongly agree and agree total was 63%
  • Neither agree or disagree was 31%
  • Strongly disagree and disagree was 6%

Hopefully the increased awareness of improvements as a result of feedback will translate into a reduction in the neither agree/disagree figure.

ACTION: We will survey members again in a year’s time to monitor performance against these questions.

Would you recommend becoming a Trust member to your family and friends?

  • Yes total was 84% and no was 16%

We are very pleased with this response and we would encourage members to encourage neighbours, colleagues and relatives to become members to help the trust become as representative as possible of the communities we serve.

ACTION: We will continue to promote the benefits of membership and how those interested can sign up.
