Staff award is ‘cherry on top’ for patient catering team

The trust’s Catering Team won the Employee of the Month award for February, following a nomination by chief financial officer Karen Geoghegan in recognition of all their hard work in challenging circumstances for the past two years while the patient catering service was redesigned.

The new accolade is a cherry on top for the team, who earlier this year also received the highest of praise from both celebrity chef Pru Leith and health secretary Matt Hancock when they visited St Richard’s to officially open the new kitchen.

Deputy director of Estates and Facilities, Sue Fisher, said: “I would just like to say how very proud I am of the whole Catering Team, from kitchen staff to food service assistants on the wards. The improvements our patients have witnessed in quality, nutrition and service from our team is second to none.”

In January, Pru Leith agreed, saying: “The truth is, this is the best institutional food I have ever eaten! And I’ve eaten in schools, hospitals, prisons and all over the place. I think it is amazing. I walked round and I couldn’t think of a single thing to complain about – which is not like me!

Patients can choose from 50 main meal options every day now, following the introduction of a new menu and service in December 2019.

In her nomination, chief financial officer Karen Geoghegan gave a special mention to head of catering Tony Shea. She wrote: “His personal leadership and commitment has enabled a plan to come to life.”
