The ‘magical’ Louisa Green wins employee of the month

Tuesday September 15, 2020

Healthcare assistant Louisa Green has won the employee of the month award, following a heartwarming nomination from Natalie Smith, who also works at Worthing Hospital.

Natalie found herself on the other side of the fence when her partner and fellow trust employee Anders-Martin Annamann Nielsen became seriously ill with Covid-19.

Speaking as a relative of a patient, Natalie praised all the staff that looked after Anders and helped him on his road to recovery. But, there was one member of staff in particular who stood out for special recognition.

In her nomination, Natalie described a special day when her partner’s spirits were lifted. “I went to video call Anders. He didn’t answer. I panicked,” wrote Natalie.

“I can’t physically see him so my brain told me the worst. I re-video called him. He answered. He was laughing, his smile reaching his eyes!

“In the background was 80s music playing, and I could hear other patients laughing. All had come out of ITU that day, all with similar journeys to Anders. And I could hear laughter and muffled karaoke singing through oxygen masks.

“Anders was dancing in the bed beaming ear to ear. He told me ‘we have an angel today’. It was absolutely magical. I sat there crying, seeing the light come back in my partner’s eyes.

“The magical HCA, Louisa Green, she restarted their spirits, helped bring back life into their souls. She helped them to start living again.

“She is definitely a WSHT angel and star. Her bright, bubbly personality was just the magic that they desperately needed.”

Natalie and Anders were so grateful to Louisa for her outstanding care that they also nominated her for an NHS Heroes Portrait and artist Jackie Piermont created a beautiful image.

Anders presented Louisa with her certificate and portrait. Matron Keeley Head said: “Louisa is an amazing HCA and is always entertaining patients. Louisa is always smiling and happy on every shift, which helps patients and relatives feel at ease. She is an exceptional part of the team.”
