Treatment of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract is provided at St Richard’s and Worthing hospitals through emergency clinics, inpatient and day case procedures and outpatient services.

Referral information for GPs

The medical gastroenterology department is a busy and active unit providing a comprehensive service for an array of gastrointestinal and hepatological disorders.

These include conditions affecting the oesophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, bile ducts and pancreas.

We see patients on an urgent and routine referral basis from local GPs and also provide acute in patient care to people presenting with sudden and unexpected complications of gastrointestinal disease.

Our consultants provide a broad level of expertise and frequently meet with colleagues from associated specialties to discuss complex benign and cancer cases.

We provide an array of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques including endoscopy (cameras looking into the oesophagus, stomach, colon, small bowel and bile ducts) and radiological (ultrasound, CT scans, MRI scans, barium examinations and nuclear medicine scans).

The Trust Board has recently agreed a significant investment to build a new state of the art endoscopy department at Worthing. This will further enhance the quality of care we are able to provide to our local population.

We enjoy close working relations with our local surgeons, pathology and microbiological colleagues as well as the dietitian department. We also work with a number of specialist nurses who provide support and advice to patients with chronic conditions including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, alcohol related disorders and liver disease.

Alongside our local expertise we also enjoy strong relationships with tertiary centres in London, Surrey and Sussex and are happy to facilitate referrals for second opinions or specialist care where required.
