Oral and maxillofacial surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) is the surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.


The scope of the specialty is extensive and includes the diagnosis and management of

  • head and neck cancers,
  • thyroid and parathyroid diseases
  • facial injuries,
  • salivary gland diseases,
  • facial disproportion,
  • facial pain,
  • temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders,
  • impacted teeth,
  • cysts and tumours of the jaws, and
  • numerous problems affecting the oral mucosa such as mouth ulcers and infections (oral medicine).

The specialty is unique in that it requires a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry.

Hospital services

The oral and maxillofacial service at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is provided by our consultants and their team across the trust’s three sites: Worthing Hospital, St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, and Southlands Hospital in Shoreham-by-Sea.

Outpatient consultation and treatment is undertaken on all three hospital sites, as is day surgery. Longer-stay inpatient surgery is carried out at St Richard’s.

Multidisciplinary clinic (including Consultant OMF Surgeon) for management and treatment planning of head and neck cancer patients
