Mortuary

Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust operates two mortuaries, one at each of our Worthing and St Richard’s sites.

Only Worthing Mortuary has post mortem facilities. These are used by both hospitals, by the West Sussex Coroner and for donation purposes.


Worthing Mortuary

Worthing mortuary acts as the head office of the Mortuary Service. The mortuary is available 24 hours a day for deceased patients from the hospital and the ambulance service. Viewing facilities are available (restricted times).

Worthing Mortuary provides a service to the West Sussex Coroner, which includes referred deaths that occur in the community, and is available 24 hours a day to the West Sussex County Council-contracted funeral director.

The mortuary is staffed between the hours of 8.00 am and 4.30 pm.


St Richard’s Mortuary

St Richard’s Mortuary is available 24 hours a day for deceased patients from the hospital and the ambulance service. Viewing facilities are available (restricted times).

The mortuary is staffed from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm and from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm.


The Mortuary Service is licensed with the Human Tissues Authority (HTA), licensing number: 12286

The Designated Individual (DI) for the licence is Jill Wright (Head Biomedical Scientist)

The Person Designated (PD) is Paul Hartfield (Lead Anatomical Pathology Technologist)
