Purpose-built facilities

Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands provides modern, purpose-designed facilities built to the latest Royal College of Ophthalmologists and Department of Health specifications.

The new outpatients department includes:

  • A main waiting area for up to 85 people, including wheelchair users, providing an extra 20 seats compared to the old department at Worthing
  • A dedicated waiting area for children, with baby changing facilities
  • 16 multi-function consultation/examination rooms – four more than we had in Worthing
  • Specialist imaging facilities
  • A fluorescein angiography room
  • A laser treatment room

The new day surgery department includes:

  • Two specialist ophthalmic operating theatres, with potential to construct a third
  • An admissions lounge with two adjacent consultation rooms
  • A separate recovery area with seating and curtained bays for additional privacy

And a number of steps have been taken to improve accessibility for patients:

  • The unit is designed for easy access and all facilities are located at ground level
  • Western Sussex Eye Care | Southlands has its own entrance on the opposite side of the hospital to its Main Entrance on Hammy Lane
  • Work to improve car parking facilities will increase the number of spaces at Southlands Hospital by 60% by the end of 2017
