Microbiology – Shift practice and rota

The trainee usually works a standard 9am-5pm working day.

SpRs contribute to a microbiology on call rota on a 1:5 basis with consultant cover. On-call is off site, though the on-call person needs to go into the laboratory on Saturdays and bank holidays (approximately 10am-4pm) to deal with authorising, new blood culture results and any other matters that cannot wait.
