Western Sussex Hospitals have joined up with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals to form a new NHS Foundation Trust for our area: University Hospitals Sussex.

You can keep using this website for information about St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands hospitals but for our other sites and to find out more about the new trust please visit www.uhsussex.nhs.uk.

Educational opportunities

There is site-specific and cross-site education weekly, with timetables including tutorials and simulation sessions produced by O&G consultant Miss Alison Crocker.

The education programme is protected within the working week timetable and can be viewed at http://pgme.info/doctors/specialties/og/

The department makes maximum use of the CMEC, which houses the Simulation Centre. Specific to obstetrics & gynaecology, the centre holds a Sim Mom, Sim Baby and a high-fidelity trans-vaginal ultrasound trainer.

At the St Richard’s site we deliver the PROMPT course, MOET course and CCrISP Course (course programmes and feedback available at http://pgme.info/clinical-skills-courses).

Trainees can access these courses preferentially as appropriate. The availability of cross-site teaching further increases training opportunities. The College Tutor works closely with library services to provide regular updates on recent relevant publications. The on-examination service is available.

An early pregnancy assessment clinic runs every weekday. There is a formal ultrasound training timetable with opportunities on scan lists as well as in the two-week rule and PMB Gynaecology clinics.

Antenatal and Labour Ward provide ultrasound machines which are used by staff to support the training of basis ultrasound modules as per the curriculum.

The ultrasound timetable can be viewed at http://pgme.info/doctors/specialties/og/

Chichester has a full range of day surgery and more complex open surgery.

Oncology cases are discussed with the cancer centre at Portsmouth at regular weekly MDT meetings.

Colposcopy and outpatient hysteroscopy lists are run on a weekly basis and provide excellent training opportunities.

Educational Supervisor

Each trainee will be allocated an educational supervisor within the department who will be responsible for overseeing their training and making sure they are making the necessary educational and clinical progress.

Educational Leads:

  • Mr Aaron McAvoy is the College Tutor at St. Richard’s Hospital
  • Miss Melanie Tipples is based at St Richard’s Hospital and is a Training Programme Director for KSS

Feedback from our trainees

We encourage feedback from our trainees both informally and formally.

The results of the GMC survey in 20149 was excellent for St Richard’s, and won an RCOG award in 2019 for excellence in training
