Western Sussex Hospitals have joined up with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals to form a new NHS Foundation Trust for our area: University Hospitals Sussex.

You can keep using this website for information about St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands hospitals but for our other sites and to find out more about the new trust please visit www.uhsussex.nhs.uk.

Overview – Worthing Hospital has a long established Department of Anaesthetics which currently provides Anaesthesia to the surgical specialities of General / Colorectal, Breast, Gynaecology, Urology, ENT / Dental / Maxillo-Facial and Trauma & Orthopaedics. In addition to these generic services, the Department also supports Delivery Suite (Obstetric Anaesthesia), Acute & Chronic Pain Services, a Pre-Assessment Service and a fully staffed 12 bedded Critical Care Unit (6 Level 3 ITU beds, 6 Level 2 HDU beds). The Department was last inspected by HEE KSS in Feb 2014 with good feedback and unconditional approval for training. In the 2017 GMC Survey the Worthing Department of Anaesthetics achieved a record 7 ‘Green Flags’ for Overall Satisfaction, Workload, Teamwork, Supportive Environment, Induction, Feedback and Local Teaching. Additionally, the Department has built a solid research reputation producing and submitting work as abstracts for presentation at national meetings where Worthing often makes the single biggest contribution of any UK centre. Worthing has produced publications in peer reviewed journals on a regular basis since 2008. Additionally, in April 2016 the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as “Outstanding”, one of only four sites in the UK to be given this rating.
