Respiratory – Shift practice and rota

The normal working hours are 9am-5 pm.

The respiratory consultants take part in the acute medical rota and provide a daily referral service for in-patients with respiratory problems.

There are 14 Medical Consultants on the acute medical on-call rota and a team of 3 consultants in acute medicine. There is a weekly fixed take day. You are not necessarily on call on the same day. The Care of the Elderly team run a separate take and admit on a needs related basis. They cover and run a specialist stroke service.

There is usually a ratio of 1:13 Registrars on-call or a 1:14 ratio with one medical registrar, two Foundation one doctors and two F2/StR (lower). StR (lower)/StR (higher) take referrals and see new patients on MAU. Foundation one doctor for wards in evening. Second Foundation one doctor and F2/StR (Lower) available after 1700. MAU team cover take in mornings.

Weekday on-call: 9am-9.30 pm / Nights: 9pm-10am (split weeks).

OoH: See above, usually at weekends a medical house officer and SHO will provide ward cover, but no routine rounds.
