Patricia Peal

Public Governor: Worthing District

“My background is in education and I have been involved, in a voluntary capacity, with the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for over 8 years.

I was a patient representative for the group which focused on treating the older patient with respect and dignity; I worked with Jackie Dominick on the ways staff could help reduce noise at night; I am patient representative for the Dementia Strategy Group and for Worthing Emergency Floor, one of the Royal College of Physicians’ initiatives.

I am a Knowing Me volunteer on both sites working with older patients on the wards, especially with those who have dementia. I received training for my work with such patients and am now asked to have new volunteers shadow me, however, I can only show them what I do, for each volunteer will bring their own strengths and ideas to the role.

As a stakeholder I attend all meetings in order to keep abreast with what is happening within the trust. I thoroughly enjoy my volunteering roles and believe I would make a good governor. I always stand up for patient and for staff rights as I believe a happy and contented workforce will enable patients to make a better recovery. If unsatisfied with an answer I am given I will ask that question again until I feel that I have been given a satisfactory answer and have not been fobbed off and this is something I will bring to the role of governor.”
