Benefits of membership

Membership of the trust is free and gives patients and local people a recognised voice in our decision making and in how we plan the hospital services of the future.

Being a member of the trust:

Enables you to help shape your hospitals’ future

As a member, you will have a voice in the trust’s long-term planning process and in identifying what our priorities will be for the future.

You can be involved as much or as little as you like – from simply being kept up to date with information about the hospitals to taking part in projects to improve or develop services.

All members are represented by a named governor who will report their views to the Council of Governors, the elected body that liaises with the trust’s Board of Directors, acts as a ‘critical friend’ to the organisation and the guardian of its values.

Keeps you up to date with what is happening in your hospitals

All our members  can attend our popular Medicine for Members events, at which our consultants and nurses give presentations and hold question and answer sessions on health topics of interest to our patients.

We also run a regular Stakeholder Forum and hold an Annual Members Meeting, which provides an update on hospital performance, showcases innovation across the trust and includes a ‘marketplace’ of stalls offering an insight into the work of our departments and specialties.


Gives you access to the Health Service Discounts scheme

As a member of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, you are eligible to register for the Health Service Discounts scheme, which allows you to save money on everything from meals out to holidays and utility bills to shopping.


Is a great way of saying thanks

Many of our patients and their relatives often want to show their appreciation for the care they have received in our hospitals.

Becoming a member is a great way to say thank you to our staff, to show your support for their efforts and help us keep improving services. Everyone aged 16 or over is welcome.


Some of the ways in which members can access these benefits include:

  • Receiving, and giving feedback on, hospital newsletters, annual reports and business plans
  • Being invited to act as a ‘barometer’ of public opinion on the trust’s reputation and services
  • Standing for election to the Council of Governors

Members are also able to:

  • Take part in surveys, questionnaires and consultations
  • Join focus, discussion, advisory and user groups
  • Attend open days and educational events
  • Help collect the views of members of the public on a range of healthcare issues
  • Become an ambassador for the trust
  • Recruit other members

Membership of the trust does not bring with it any benefit or privilege when using our services.
